C2PA Standards Intelligence 2026: A Claim-Level Assessment of the U.S. Patent Portfolio Through the C2PA Technical Architecture

A claim-level assessment of the U.S. patent portfolio through the C2PA technical architecture, covering Content Credentials, Soft Binding and Attestation. The portfolio comprises 541 U.S. patent publications, 1,642 publication-specific independent-claim mappings and 45 primary C2PA technical references.

Overview
C2PA establishes a technical architecture for recording, binding, signing, recovering and validating information about digital-content provenance. That architecture draws on technologies that developed across distinct patent domains, including digital signatures, hashing, watermarking, fingerprinting, provenance records and platform attestation. Patenti's 2026 assessment examines how publication-specific independent claims are positioned within this architecture rather than treating content authenticity as a single technology landscape. The assessed U.S. portfolio comprises 541 patent publications and 1,642 independent-claim mappings, resolved against a frozen technical corpus spanning C2PA Content Credentials 2.3, Soft Binding 2.2 and Attestation 1.4. The analysis resolves those claims across 45 primary C2PA technical references and examines the distribution of patent activity across the three principal technical families. The report is a standards-resolved technical assessment of patent positioning within C2PA. It is not presented as a census of every patent concerning provenance technologies, nor as a legal determination of essentiality, infringement or licensing obligation.
Key Findings
Four technical references account for 940 mappings, or 57.2% of the assessed claim-level portfolio: watermarking algorithms, digital signatures, data hashing and explicit-attestation evidence.
Soft Binding comprises 514 independent-claim mappings across nine primary technical references; 328 relate primarily to watermarking, while the remainder spans fingerprinting, resolution and combined binding mechanisms.
468 of the 541 publications contain more than one mapped independent claim, demonstrating why publication-level counts can conceal claim-level technical structure.
78 publications contain claims mapped to more than one primary technical reference, and 10 span more than one principal C2PA family.
